UK Judiciary Sets Human Decision and AI Approval Safeguards

The Courts and Tribunals Judiciary published its position statement on judicial AI use on October 9, 2026. AI may assist but must not displace judicial reasoning, evaluation of evidence or discretion, and every AI output used in judicial work must be reviewed, verified and approved by the responsible judicial office holder. Only approved tools may be used for judicial purposes; their features must include UK data residency, enterprise data protection and disabled web access. A centralized steering group chaired by the Lead AI Judge is the route for oversight of new tools, pilots and deployment. The statement describes a cautious but positive approach supported by testing, training and ongoing review. It complements the October 2025 AI guidance and is not a statute or approval of any outside platform.

PARADIGM INSIGHTS:

Human responsibility needs an operating process, not a promise on a slide. A proposed court or arbitration tool should identify who approves its use, who checks each output, how sensitive material is protected and how a failed pilot is stopped. The judiciary's safeguards are a useful design benchmark, not an endorsement of Paradigm or proof of deployment in another country.
